I recently tried out the Franklin STK Carbon Fiber Signature Paddle and wanted to share my thoughts on its performance. Overall, I think it has its pros and cons.

Starting with the pros, I really liked the long handle which gave me more maneuverability and made it comfortable for hand battles. When I hit the sweet spot, the paddle had a pleasant semi-soft feel to it.

It’s also lightweight and well-balanced, which I appreciated. Additionally, the paddle was stable and effective at blocking drives, and I appreciated that it came in two different thickness options, 14.5mm or 17mm.

On the downside, the paddle had a small sweet spot, and the ball noticeably died around the edges more than I would have liked. The spin was average, and I was getting 1250-1300 RPMs with it compared to 1500+ RPMs with other raw carbon paddles. Power was also lacking, especially for a 14.5 mm paddle. Finally, I found the handle to be bulky and uncomfortable compared to other premium brands.

Moving onto performance details, the paddle felt light and well-balanced, but it took me a while to get used to it. The sweet spot was small, so I had a harder time getting consistent hits with it. I would categorize this paddle as a control paddle, despite its thinner core.

It has a semi-soft feel that I liked, but it took me a while to get used to it. I had a lower success rate with drops and dinks because I missed the smaller sweet spot, and the shot would fall short.

I was disappointed with the spin of the STK, which was not as high as I expected from a raw carbon fiber face. I found that I could generate enough power on my own, but the paddle didn’t give me any extra pop for a 14.5 mm paddle. When I hit drives and overheads in the sweet spot, they were effective, but if I missed it, the shot would look ugly.

I also noticed that sometimes, when I hit the ball near the edge, it would make a really loud and unpleasant noise, which I had never experienced with another paddle before.

One thing I did appreciate about the paddle was that it absorbed the ball really well, and felt stable, which helped me defend against aggressive opponents. The combination of good control and a thinner core for increased maneuverability was the highlight of the paddle for me.

The longer 5.6-inch handle felt comfortable, but the handle itself was bulkier, and I could feel the honeycomb core on the side, which I didn’t like.

Overall, I think the Franklin STK Carbon Fiber Signature Paddle has its strengths and weaknesses, and it’s up to personal preference whether it’s the right paddle for you.
